The Catacombs of Saint Callixtus in Rome are a significant historical site and fascinating glimpse into the past. These subterranean tombs, believed to have been constructed in the 2nd century AD, were used by early Christians for burials until the 5th century. With your qualified guide you will walk some of the labyrinth of galleries and passages that stretch for miles, that contained the remains of early Christian martyrs. The guide will explain the meaning of the many inscriptions and frescoes that provide an invaluable insight into early Christian art and beliefs. You will  have an unique opportunity to learn about the history of Christianity and the development of early Christian art and architecture.

The visit to these Catacombs of Saint Callixtus will show you the interesting rituals and spiritual feelings of the early Roman Catholic church.

General information

 The tour will last approximately 45 minutes. You will tour with a quailified guide along with a very small number of people of your same language.

The Catacombs are a sacred place, it is advisable to dress appropriately. The constant temperature is about 59°F/15 °C and there is a high level of humidity.
The Monument is not accessible by wheelchair and is not recommended for both those suffering from claustrophobia and those with serious walking problems. There are 50 irregular steps to go down, so as to go up and no possibility to sit down along the way; there are no elevators, the floor is uneven. Pets are not allowed,, not even with pet carriers.
